Planting guide
What to plant in Auckland, New Zealand in August
August in Auckland is mild but wet — the tail end of a winter that rarely freezes near the coast. Drainage, not cold, is the main constraint. It is the traditional month to get seed potatoes in for new potatoes at Christmas, and to start the spring garden while the soil is still soft from winter rain.
Plant now
The classic August job — plant early varieties now for new potatoes on the Christmas table.
Direct-sow in a well-drained spot; they crop through spring.
Leafy greens grow steadily in Auckland’s mild winter — sow in succession for a continuous supply.
Plant runners now so they establish before spring flowering — mounded rows help with the wet.
Sow in trays in a glasshouse or bright windowsill; the traditional Auckland plant-out is Labour Weekend in late October.
Timing notes
- Waterlogging kills more August plantings in Auckland than cold does — use raised beds or mounds, and stay off saturated soil.
- Light frosts are still possible inland and in valley floors through September — Labour Weekend is the traditional all-clear for tender crops.
- Slugs and snails are at their worst in the wet — protect every new seedling from day one.
